Fundraising & Events Coordinator
Location: Houston, TX
Breast Cancer Network of Strength, formerly known as Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization, is seeking a full-time (30 hours per week) Fundraising & Events Coordinator to report to the Special Events Manager, and work with the affiliate board of directors and volunteer Walk leadership:
- to recruit corporate and family teams of fundraising walkers,
- to secure corporate sponsors and media partners, and
- to organize logistics for a Walk, taking place on Mother’s Day in Houston.
The Fundraising &l Events Coordinator will also recruit an affiliate team for Network of Strength’s Ride to Empower in October.
Founded in 1978 and one of the leading non-profit breast cancer organizations in the United States, Network of Strength is dedicated to ensuring, through information, empowerment and peer support, that no one faces breast cancer alone. Network of Strength uniquely provides peer support through YourShoes, a 24/7 breast cancer support center staffed entirely by trained breast cancer survivors who know first-hand what it is like to walk in the shoes of someone who is facing the disease.

Job Description
Specific duties for this position include:
- Raise a minimum of $395,000 for the three events ($250,000 for the 2010 Walk to Empower, $75,000 for the 2010 Unsung Heroes Event, and $70,000 for the 2010 Ride to Empower)
- Manage event expenses within the budget
- Serve as main contact for all Walk participants – walkers, sponsors, volunteers
- Complete a written projection plan for attaining special event goals, and work to meet fundraising goal and budget expectations
- Manage Walk Corporate Chair & Honorary Chair to recruit large teams of walkers from area’s largest employers
- Manage Walk Family Team Chair and Committee to recruit teams from area families
- Execute event media outreach by recruiting local media partners
- Coordinate Walk Day logistics (route, checkpoints, entertainment, food, refreshments, volunteer support, program)
- Organize Executive Breakfast in collaboration with Walk Corporate Chair, with attendees representing area’s largest corporate employers 20 weeks prior to Walk Day to recruit corporate sponsors and corporate teams
- Conduct follow-up phone calls to secure strategy meetings with all Executive Breakfast attendees and those who could not attend to secure corporate sponsorship and develop the strategy for building a large team
- Organize casual Walk Family Team Building Workshop(s) 12 weeks prior to Walk Day to recruit family teams
- Organize Walk Team Captain Luncheon taking place 10 weeks prior to Walk Day to provide materials, information and encouragement to Team Captains (representing corporate, family, school, organizational, etc. teams)
- Conduct follow-up phone calls with all Walk Team Captains after the luncheon to ensure progress toward their goals
- Conduct 20-minute Walk team kickoff presentations at area companies to pique interest and build teams
- Conduct internal Walk team-building kickoff presentations at participating companies
- Manage volunteer committees, including Family Teams Committee
- Conduct participant communication, as outlined by national Walk program manual, e.g. e-mail marketing
- Coordinate post-Walk Awards Recognition Event
- Raise $75,000 dollars for the Unsung Heroes Event
- Research, recruit and manage relationships with corporate sponsors
- Coordinate event day logistics (volunteer recruitment, secure vendors)
- Facilitate monthly event committee meetings
- Conduct post-event wrap-up (send thank you notes, create wrap-up binder, debrief with key volunteers)
- Recruit a team of riders to participate in the October Ride to Empower
- Coordinate logistics for Ride team informational sessions, team kickoff and fundraising clinics
- Recruit local Ride sponsors
- Participate in regular progress report meetings with supervisor
- Submit weekly progress and projection reports to the Special Events Manager
- Conduct participant communication, as outlined by national event program manuals and by other Network of Strength standards
- Periodically update events Web site and continuously maintain accurate computer files and events lists
- Assist the Executive Director with planning and implementation of local fundraising events as assigned
- Oversee third party events
- Other duties and projects as assigned or needed
Skills Required
- 3-5 years experience in event planning and fundraising required
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet; HTML experience a plus
- Solid experience leading and managing volunteers
- Strong presentation skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of people
- Detail oriented and well-organized
- Ability to adhere to timelines
- Ability to multitask in fast-paced environment
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 15 pounds
- Bachelor's Degree
- Bilingual in Spanish and English strongly preferred
- Reliable transportation for local travel required by job
