Memo to Journalists

As you put your National Breast Cancer Awareness Month stories together, please keep us in mind as a resource for you and your audience.

We are a network of survivors and experts right here, available for features, profiles and comments on breaking health care news.  We also have a good b-roll package of our services and PSA script ideas.  Contact ckoenig@networkofstrength.org for details.

Here’s what we have going on this month.

And most importantly, we are there for your audience, not just in October, but 24/7/365 to provide breast cancer information and support. Read this short article about YourShoes™, our breast cancer support center that includes the country’s only 24/7 toll-free hotline staffed exclusively by breast cancer survivors, with interpreters in 150 languages.

Finally, a note about the Economy.  It’s been a tough year and it has affected us in two major ways.  First, donations for non-profits across the board are down.  We have scaled back on some fronts but our core, free-of-charge service, the 24/7 YourShoes Breast Cancer Support Center is going strong.

The other way the economy is affecting us is that the demand for our services is great. We’re hearing from our peer counselors on the 24/7 YourShoes support center that now, more than ever, people are seeking our support.  Many who contact us are affected by job losses in their families and the insurance that went along with those jobs.

Our peer counselors are instrumental in helping people sort through the heartache of a breast cancer diagnosis.  But in these trying times they also are able to help people make a plan to get the help they need like finding screening and treatment resources.
