What is TOTE and how does that relate to golf? TOTE is an acronym for Tee off to Empower. This third
party event is a closest to the pin target challenge where a golfer’s score on all four par threes counts. Golfers tee off at each par three and record a score based on the distance between the hole and their tee shot.
A few years ago Mid-Atlantic began asking area women’s golf associations to sponsor a TOTE at their club. The activity has grown over the years. This year five clubs signed up and Pinecrest Women’s Golf Association (PWGA) has set a huge, new record! Kathy Rath with the help of her committee raised over $10,000 to benefit Breast Cancer Network of Strength Mid-Atlantic.
The secrets to their success?
Start early—they began in January to gather donations from area merchants for silent auction and raffle items. Kathy and her committee members visited merchants and made their request in person. That approach worked best rather than letters or emails.
Seed money – the Pinecrest Men’s League sponsored an Ice Breaker Scramble in March which gave the PWGA seed money to offset the expenses for the event.
Large number of golfers – they opened the TOTE event to the men after some of them expressed an interest as they also had been touched by breast cancer. And they visited other golf course to recruit golfers and sell raffle tickets.
Raffle and Silent Auction – they had so many items donated they were able to have 36 raffle items, thus increasing ticket sales. And the silent auction raised almost a third of the total donation.
Thank you so much to Kathy Rath, her co-chair Pam Matthes, and her committee members; Jane Barnes, Ruth Davis, Margaret, Denise, Lisa Dolan, Judy Erikson, Anita Gardner, Shirley McKinley, Trippi Penland and Ingrid Tomaske; for their hard work and dedication to TOTE. The proceeds will be used to provide peer-to-peer support for those touched by breast cancer so that no one faces breast cancer alone.
