Community Outreach
A Day for You and Friends of Ann & Mimi
A Day for You participants attend an all-day event and learn about earlier detection methods, are taught breast self-examination (BSE) and receive clinical breast exams. For those qualified to receive a mammogram, arrangements for a mammogram appointment will be made.
Working in conjunction with A Day for You, Friends of Ann & Mimi assists A Day for You participants in need of follow-up services. Women Trained volunteers with knowledge of the healthcare system accompany women to follow-up appointments, when necessary, so they may arrive informed and confident. Since the volunteers speak the same language as the woman they accompany, cultural and language barriers are minimized. The volunteers also address transportation and insurance concerns. Se estableció el programa "A Day for You" (Un Día para Ti) en el Breast Cancer Network of Strength Mid-Atlantic con el fin de abordar los problemas del cáncer de mama en la población de mujeres latinas de la región que no ha recibido la atención que merece. El programa, hecho posible gracias a una generosa donación de la Fundación Avon, educa a las participantes sobre los métodos de detección temprana del cáncer de mama, enseña a examinarse una misma el seno (sigla en inglés, BSE), proporciona exámenes clínicos del seno y, si fuera apropiado, mamografías en el lugar. El programa ayuda a las mujeres cuyos resultados han sido anormales a obtener la atención posterior necesaria.
Health Fairs and Related Events
Breast Cancer Network of Strength Mid-Atlantic volunteers are available to staff health fairs and related events with visual aids and literature about breast health and breast cancer.
