About the Call:
Your genetic history can be an invaluable tool in assessing your cancer risk; however, the decision to be tested should not be taken lightly. In this presentation, Shelly Cummings will discuss a range of genetic testing issues. She will describe the cancer risks associated with the BRCA gene mutations and will discuss the use of genetic test results in medical management. She will also review the features of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. Finally, Ms. Cummings will teach callers about risk assessment and the counseling process that comes with gene testing and will provide valuable insight on relevant health insurance issues.

About the Speaker:
Shelly Cummings, M.S., is a genetic counselor and regional medical specialist with Myriad Genetic Laboratories, Inc. Prior to this position, Ms. Cummings was a cancer genetic counselor at the University of Chicago for 13 years. Ms. Cummings has spoken nationally on a range of topics including genetics, hereditary cancer syndromes, genetic testing for cancer predisposition genes and the psychological aspects of cancer predisposition. She is a writer and editor for the National Society of Genetic Counselors’ national newsletter, Perspectives in Genetic Counseling, and she has authored several original articles on cancer genetics in journals such as the American Journal of Human Genetics, the Journal of Genetic Counseling, Human Genetics, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Oncology. She is a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors, American Society of Human Genetics, American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society for the Advancement of Science, and is a Network of Strength and American Cancer Society volunteer.
