Meet John Gwyn
Let’s hear it for our star Rider. Pedal on, John, we’re behind you all the way. Chances are that if you told John Gwyn just a year ago that he would be riding in a Century Destination ride to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer you would be getting a response in the vein of “…are you out of your mind? No way.”
Well, clearly John has found a way and he is riding in the Breast Cancer Network of Strength Ride to Empower in Red Rock, Las Vegas, taking place from October 22nd to 25th. Simply put, he made up his mind – encouraged by his tri-athlete older brother -- to do it as much to prove that he can as in tribute to his mom who suffered from breast cancer as well as to the many women in his company who also have had their battles with the disease. In short, John is no stranger to breast cancer and the devastating effects it can have on the entire family. In honor of his dedication, his co-workers at Operating Engineers Trust Fund in Pasadena, led by super cheerleader Doris Campbell, have been hard at work for the past several months organizing fundraisers to support John’s efforts and send him off to Red Rock in grand style.
And he has been training…oh, and how! Perched upon his road bike, he hit the trails setting personal records from the Pasadena half-marathon to the devil dog duathlon at camp Pendelton to a four-day mountain bike excursion in Colorado this past Summer. There does not seem to be anything stopping our athlete these days. With those achievements under his belt, he has set the Breast Cancer Network of Strength Ride to Empower as his benchmark for a good challenge to push himself for his personal best. And, yes, he intends to complete the entire 100 miles of the Ride.
Living healthy has been on John’s agenda for the past several years as he embarked on an exercise regiment to get in better shape. The Ride is yet another way for him to fulfill his commitment to his health-conscious lifestyle.
A Desert Storm vet, John is a Southern California native – yes, one of very few – born in the Eagle Rock area of Los Angeles. He lives in a 100-year-old house and...brews his own beer! Indeed, he recently finished his first batch and we are awaiting the verdict on whether it was a success. The jury is still out but we have a sense that with his determination and drive, even his beer brewing endeavor is bound to be a success.
