Yes, that’s our t-shirt on Kaitlyn Waidley, daughter of the Southern California Affiliate Board member Ericka Waidley, and a repeat Walk to Empower participant in San Diego. On her recent hike to Half Dome the week before Labor Day — a 17-mile round trip hike which took 12-hours to complete — Kaitlyn undoubtedly woke up to a drawerful of t-shirts to wear and chose the one that said Breast Cancer Network of Strength Mother’s Day Walk to Empower. Thank you, Kaitlyn, good choice. You have taken our name to the mountain.
An accomplished water polo player, Kaitlyn, a 16-year-old junior at Laguna Beach High School, is known to her family as “bionic girl” for the two titanium rods she has in her spine following surgery to correct her scoliosis last year. To us she is WONDER WOMAN and bionic girl all rolled into one. We are proud of you, Kaitlyn, for your athletic accomplishments and thank you for wearing our name so prominently. Next year when you’re up there again, listen carefully to the sounds echoing through the atmosphere at Half Dome mountain and we are certain you will hear our collective cheering voice.
